On September 30th, downtown Crystal Lake is honoring John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed.
For twenty-five years, the festival has welcomed thousands of visitors who come together to celebrate fall.
Apple Scavenger Hunt – To celebrate the festival’s 25th anniversary, the city is hosting a scavenger hunt through September 25th. Downtown businesses with apples in their windows offer game cards, and to play, participants must find all twenty-five apples to reveal the words needed to form a complete sentence. Drop off finished cards to Marvin’s Toy Store for a chance to win a prize.
Scarecrow Decorating Contest – Decorate a scarecrow to compete against individuals and businesses in categories such as Most Creative, Most Colorful, and Scariest. The entries are displayed downtown, and to enter, participants must reserve a lamp post.
Great Ball Race – Want a chance to win one thousand dollars? Then purchase a numbered raffle ticket and watch as hundreds of balls roll down Brink Street. The one that crosses the finish line first will win the top prize for its owner. Runner-ups will receive gift cards or merchandise from area businesses.
Demonstrations – Visitors can watch and participate in demonstrations of an antique apple peeler and apple cider press.
Entertainment – The festival also features amusement rides, pumpkin bowling, and musical guests who will take to the stage.
