Fall usually means cooler temperatures, colorful leaves and the Johnny Appleseed Festival. It’s the largest one-day event held in downtown Crystal Lake and residents of Algonquin Square Apartments will find it’s approximately fifteen minutes away. The fun takes place on September 24th and there is plenty to see and do for all ages:
Craft Fair – From 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., visitors can explore the craft fair in the Ormsby Motors’ parking lot. It features dozens of vendors who sell items such as jewelry, painted rocks, quilts, scarves, and holiday decorations.
Farmers Market – During the festival, the farmers market will be located on the corner of Grant and Brink. You can shop for a variety of items such as cookies, produce, preserves, artisan-style European breads, and fresh fish.
Great Ball Race – For some added fun, purchase a raffle ticket for the Great Ball Race. Then watch as colorful, numbered balls roll down Brink Street. If the number on your raffle ticket matches the number on one of the balls that cross the finish line first, you’ll win a prize. One lucky winner will take home $1,000.
Scarecrow Decorating – Both businesses and individuals alike can compete in the Scarecrow Decorating Contest. You will see them hanging on the city’s light poles, and categories include: Judges’ Choice, Most Creative, and Scariest.
Pie Eating Contest – Compete against the clock and nine other contestants in the Pie Eating Contest. There’s a five-minute time limit and you can’t use your hands. The entry fee is five dollars.
